Six Months of Movies: January to June 2014

Another six months has gone by and I didn't even notice, hence the late nature of this post. It's not exactly a high priority either, but decided to get around to it. Instead of just giving boring old numbers, I figured I would provide some information on the movies I watched this past six months. But first, the numbers.

Fig 1. January 2014 to June 2014
Nothing too exciting to report here, aside from consistency. No more than 15 movies in a month, and no less than nine. If I knew I was dipping into single digits, I would have picked up the slack.

Fig 2. January to June Year by Year Comparison
This comparison between the same period in 2014, 2013 and 2011 speaks more to the consistency I mentioned before. 2013 had a major dip in it, and 2011 was very much more up and down, whereas 2014 has been less prone to those fluctuations. In terms of total viewed, it's pretty steady throughout the years.

2014: 73 movies
2013: 67 movies
2011: 70 movies

What type of movies did I take in for 2014? We can start first by speaking to the quality of the film, as when I record a view, I also record a rating to it, on a scale of one to five stars.

Four movies scored 4.5/5, those being: Inception, The Dark Knight, TRON: Legacy and Senna.

Quite a few more scored 4. Many of these were movies I've seen before, save these films which have a late 2013 or 2014 release: Edge of Tomorrow, Gravity, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Wolf of Wall Street.

In the first six months of 2014, I've seen 12 movies actually released in 2014, 23 from 2013 and 16 from before 1995.

The worst two movies I saw in this period were Nurse 3-D and The Art of the Steal, sitting at 1 and 1.5 stars respectively. There are quite a few movies sitting at 2 stars, which I don't believe: Critters and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai were good, fun movies but somehow got a low rating. Pompeii and Robocop (the remake) got a deserved score of 2, and both were released in 2014.

The overall average is 3.1 stars, which makes sense.

When will I watch a 5 out of 5 movie?

Six Months of Movies: July to December 2013

Ah yes, it's that time again. Well, it was really that time a couple of months ago, but I'm a master procrastinator. It's nearing the end of March and all the stats have been waiting to be assimilated into something greater

Fig 1; July 2013 to December 2013

What happened in November and December? Apparently I had a great number of free weekends and very little else to do, as I was watching movies constantly. I also utilized my time better: there are so many instances where a couple of hours goes by without anything happening, so I made an effort to fill those periods with a short movie here and there. If only I watched one more movie in December, it would have set a record, but instead it's still sitting at 17 in any given month.

Fig 2; July through December Three Year Comparison
Now we have three years worth of data for one period. I knew this would pay off long term! 2013 and 2012 follow nearly the same path, although 2013 generally had more each month. Something happened in October that caused a major dip in intake, wherein in 2010 it was the complete opposite for the horror themed month. My initial thought was my friend, Cale, when we both lived in the same city. October was most likely a lot of horror movies being watched, and when we moved apart, that trend stopped.

Fig 3; Total Movies in 2013 by Month
Finally, we have a month by month break down of total movies watched. It's quite the rollercoaster ride.

At the end of 2013, I subscribed to Letterboxd, which has provided for even more statistics that I couldn't hope to create on my own. They even create a handy little page for it, which can be found here. I'll give you a little rundown of what it says though.

  • Total Movies watched in 2013: 143
  • 263.5 hours of movies
  • 11.9 movies per month
  • 2.8 movies per week
  • Sunday has the most movies watched at 43
  • Thursday is the lowest day, with 10 overall
  • Top Genres:
    • Thriller
    • Action
    • Drama
  • 30.8% of movies were made in 2013
  • 91.6% of movies I was watching for the first time
  • Most common rating I gave movies was 3.5 / 5

Movie Diary

Not sure how many of you click on it, but I've had a link pointing towards my "Watched Movies" for a while. It's also been the source of some of my favourite posts where I compile useless numbers and post graphs regarding the number of movies I watch over a six month time period:

In case you don't see, that's a solid year of film right there. As we come up to another year of movies (including a full calendar year of January to December - a first in my log), I began to evaluate how I'm keeping track of these films. The platform of choice has been IMDb, but I've hit certain limitations on it. The major one that I just can't get around is not being able to add a second viewing to the list. IMDb allows only one film per list, so it's not that good at a movie diary. In the past I've manually entered things in for the odd film here and there, but that's not going to be viable long term.

IMDb was also a bit plain looking.

So I spent a morning taking a look around to see what else was available, with the most important feature in mind. I stumbled across Letterboxd, which was described as a social network for movie lovers. You could make lists, add movies to them and share your reviews and ratings. You can add friends and keep a diary of films you've watched. I checked it out right away, opened an account and tried adding a second viewing of a film. It worked, and it worked really well. You can add any film, record the day you watched it, add any comments/review and submit it handily to your movie diary. And because the site is geared towards social, it's quite easy to share everything (all your lists may be public by default).

Which brings us to the Watched Movies link. You'll see that it now points directly to my Movie Diary on Letterboxd, and you'll find the Movie Collection link brings you to a list I created to keep track of what Blurays I own. This one I'm a bit more hesitant to use, as it doesn't keep track of actual releases, only movies. So I may look for another service for that. Right now, I'm still using the Google spreadsheet, but will publish this list as it's much nicer to look at.

I'm also updating the link to be called Movie Diary.

And since I love you all so much, I subscribed to the pro version of Letterboxd, which allowed me to import my list from IMDb in, so none of that date is lost. It also provides me with a "Year in Review" page that I couldn't resist. This page brings some nice stats, including some that would have been impossible for me to compile on my own, including most watched genre, actor, director and how many hours of movies watched. Which can be a scary number to think about.

So that's it for now, I hope you all enjoy the updates! I'm definitely having fun putting this stuff together!

Six Months of Movies: Part 2: More Movies

I've been awaiting this day anxiously and with a certain giddiness. Six months have passed. That's six more months of movie watching and movie stats to extract from. More comparisons. And it shall be glorious, right?

Last time I chronicled the time period of July 2012 through to December 2012. Check out the post to refresh your memory, if you like. This time around, we'll be going over January 2013 through the end of June 2013. This is exciting.

Fig 1; January 2013 to June 2013

Figure 1, above outlines the total number of movies watched per month. We managed to hit a record high here of 16 in June, which is pretty exciting and a direct result of me doing split movies. This is the practice of watching half a movie one night, then finishing the second night. A part of me thinks this is cheating in some way, that a view should be encapsulated in one sitting. But, that's not how it works here right now. Sixteen may sound like a lot, but it seems to standard for June. You can see that in June 2011 I took in 17 movies, and rest assured there was little splitting going on. Quite simply, June is a major movie month with plenty of new releases coming to theatres. I went at least once a week every week.

Fig 2; 2011 to 2013 comparison

Now we can compare the same period in 2013 to 2011, in figure 2 above. As I mentioned before, June is a monster month for movies, with 16 in 2013 and 17 in 2011. While this year saw a steady decline of movies over the months, 2011 was more up and down. The decline this year is due directly to an increased consumption of video games, specifically: Borderlands. I typically spend my Friday and Saturday nights playing at my buddy's place, where before we would typically take in a movie or two on each of those nights.

Fig 3; Year 1 to Year 2
A very basic comparison of a full twelve months of movies, from July 2010 to June 2011, and July 2012 to June 2013. Unfortunately I didn't record movies for an entire year; fortunately I started recording at the right time for an even comparison between two years. While figure 3 may illustrate a large gap, it's quite small: 134 in year one and 128 in year two.

And there you have it, an average of 131 movies per year. How does that break down?

  • 2.5 movies per week.
  • 10.9 movies per month
  • June is the highest consumption at 33 movies
  • August is the lowest consumption at 13 movies
Fig 4; Two Years of Movies
Finally, figure 4 shows us a combined total of movies, per month, between years 1 and 2. As noted above, June is the highest at 33. What is noteworthy here is the rollercoaster view appearing. A dip before and after June, when clearly most movies are released. August and March/April/May are lowest, as we ramp up to the summer movie season and come off it in August with a lull in releases.

Six Months of Movies

Starting on July 1, 2012 I began recording all the movies I saw on IMDB; you can create custom lists on the site and add movies as you see fit there, so I created a list called "Watched" and with the mobile app, I would quickly add a movie I just saw to that list. This was a natural evolution of a manual system I did a couple of years ago, where I recorded the film in an online spreadsheet. What I would find, though, is that I would often forget to add the title to the spreadsheet, and it became inaccurate over time to the point that I stopped recording the information.

I started doing this because my friend Art has kept ticket stubs to every single movie he's been to since the mid-90s. I've seen them: ziploc bags stuffed to capacity of receipts. My immediate thought was to digitize the data and have the ability to generate little reports and facts from the stubs. But, I don't think he had much interest in that, so I went ahead and did my own data accumulation. I went with IMDB simply because I myself always opening the app to take a look at the trivia and other details, so why not just add an extra step of adding it to the watched list?

So what are the numbers? From July to December (six months) I watched 61 movies, of which 21 of those were released in 2012. Now, it just so happens that I was recording my movie habits back in 2010 at the same time period, and in that year I took in 64 movies, which I find interesting. This past six months it has felt as though I've watched fewer movies, and I have, but as it turns out it's not nearly as big a drop as I had thought. I also have recorded the first six months of 2011, during time I watched 72 movies. Around mid-point 2011, I stopped recording movie data.

Here is some data:

Fig 1; July to December 2012
As you can see from the chart (fig 1, above), something horrible happened in October, and I'm not sure what it was. Only three movies consumed; August was a small dip as well, but it seems the average is about 12 to 13 movies per month. It will be interesting to see if I can maintain the high numbers of November and December.

Fig 2; 2010 to 2012 Comparison
Now, looking at the next chart (fig 2), we can see how 2010 corresponds to 2012 across the same period. It's interesting to note that a similar thing that happened in October of 2012 happened in August of 2010. In 2010, I would chalk that up to vacation and travel time, but I can't be completely certain. We finish the year off in December with the same number of movies watched, and a similar average of 12 per month (excluding the lowest month).

While I can't necessarily draw any conclusions from this, I look forward to doing more data crunching and analysis in the future. And since the movie information is coming from IMDB, there exists a great deal of metadata on the movie itself. For instance, I can rate movies and compare those ratings to the ones that the IMDB community have settled upon. While I do this at a quick glance, I can see that most of my ratings are lined up pretty well on par, with the biggest exception perhaps being Iron Sky, which I attributed a 3 out of 10, while on IMDB it has achieved a 6.1 out of 10. Perhaps I was being too harsh, but generally I don't put much important on my numerical rating as I do it infrequently and without standard.

I've upated my online Movie Log spreadsheet with the IMDB export, and can be found here: Movie Log

IMDB Ratings

Just wanted to bring to your attention a new link on the upper right side of the page (underneath Home). It's "IMDB Movie Ratings" and will take you to my ratings list on - you guessed it - IMDB.

I've neglected creating an account there for years, for no good reason. But a few months ago I registered and started adding movies to my watchlist (something I will make public and add soon as well). You may recall that I was trying to keep track of all the movies I've seen, with varying levels of success. The problem with the old manual system I was using (a spreadsheet) was that it was indeed, manual. I would forget to do it, I would neglect it often and I just lost interest. Enter the IMDB app on the iPhone and updating that list is incredibly simple. I realized this after noticing that I check out the trivia and IMDB page for every movie I see shortly after seeing it: one more click and it's there.

So you will see my ratings, and it's nice format: searchable, sortable and full of data. There are not many right now, but I will add them as I see movies: I'm not too keen on going back to rate the thousands of movies I've seen over the past thirty years, but I may get bored.

Also, don't read too much into the numerical ratings. I've stayed away from them on The Chronicles and will continue to do so. If you want the scoop read my take on it, because a 7/10 for one movie could be entirely different than a 7/10 for another. Enjoy!

Movie Update - June 2011

Last month was just a torrent of movie consumption. It's not often this happes, but it really depends on what's going on in any particular month. May was Hawaii, which meant I was gone for most of the month and not taking in any films. Perhaps June was my month to make that up, as I took a whole bucket-load in. In no particular order:

Videodrome
My Girl
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Choke
Rubber
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Adjustment Bureau, The
Paul
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Gnomeo and Juliet
Insomnia
X-Men: First Class
Enter the Void
Piranha 3D
Company Men, The
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Pirate of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Actually that's a straight up lie: the above is in order of viewing. What stood out? Well, I seemed to get into the franchise thing with Pirates of the Caribbean, but couldn't bear to load the third film. The first one was magnificent and exactly what I wanted. The second was convoluted, corny and it only got worse from there. I watched all three Lord of the Rings movies (extended, of course) thanks to their BluRay release this month. It's been so long since I watched them that I was completely engrossed in them. For all the moaning of how long they are and perhaps tedious at times, they really are fantastic films that immerse you in the world of Middle Earth.

Aside from that, just some other solid films, with a couple of quirky ones thrown in for good measure. I'm trying to watch some old classics, hence the My Girl viewing in there (and yeah, it got me teary-eyed). Paul was a riot and Rubber is bound to become a cult classic, one I'm happy to be a member of.

Movie Update - May 2011

This has basically been a pitiful month for movie viewing, although all the movies I saw - save one - were top notch. Of course, you can string together the reason for the general lack of movie watching: vacation! So I'm hoping June will be more involved, and how can it not? We start the month off with a bang: X-Men First Class. There are a few big titles in the theatre right now that I want to take in: Fast Five, Hangover 2 and this new Pirates movie. Anyway, here is the list:

  • Thor
  • Super
  • Priest
  • Moon

Also of note are that all the movie titles contain one word only. Weird.

Movie Update - March 2011

Not in any particular order, here are the movies I saw in March! Not a bad run if I must say so. I'm curious though, if I didn't put 60 hours into Fallout 3 over the past four weeks if there would have been even more movies taken in.

Movies Update - February 2011

Considering how short the month is, I managed to take in quite a few movies. Every so often the task of committing two hours to any one thing is daunting, and other times, you realize that it's no time at all. This must have been one of those months, as I pull a couple of double features and fill late nights with relatively short films.

  • District 9
  • Henry Poole is Here
  • Cool World
  • Funny Games U.S.
  • The Zombie Diaries
  • Monsters
  • The Royal Tenenbaums
  • Lord of War
  • Teeth
  • I Am Number Four
  • The Other Guys
  • 127 Hours
  • Unknown
  • Centurion

Movie Update - January 2011

Here's a rundown of the movies I watched this month. A bit on the slower side, perhaps, as my video-gaming increased and I try to get caught up on some television shows.
A pretty good selection of movies, really; although not as many as should be watched. Secret Window and Zack and Miri were done in a double feature on Netflix. I fell in love with Salvation again, and I finally got around to seeing The Social Network, a very high recommend. Vacancy was solid, if forgettable and Shaun of the Dead is great for a laugh. I would definitely recommend checking out some more classic zombie movies beforehand as there are a lot of good references in there: many I missed years ago when I first saw it. Finally, The American is a great piece of cinema that may not be for everyone, but if you love movies you will certainly appreciate this one.

Movies seen in December 2010

Well now that I'm keeping track of all the movies I've seen and when I can post a little end of month summary of them. This one is being written a bit early, as I'll be vacationing in December and won't have time to do updates. Perhaps I'll go back and edit the post after it's been updated. Just for you.

  • Easy A [7] - Decent movie, but probably forgettable.
  • The Prestige [9] - This one keeps growing on me everytime I watch it.
  • Dogma [7.5] - Not as heavy as I remembered.
  • The Illusionist [7.5] - Not as good as The Prestige, but very solid.
  • Judge Dredd [5.5] - Actually quite a bit of fun to watch this after fifteen years; probably should give it a higher score...
  • Restrepo [8.5] - Terrifying and amazing.
  • Aliens [10] - Definitely one of the favourites of all time.
  • Alien [10] - Absolutely fantastic film; creepy, suspenseful and engrossing.
My score in braces, out of ten.
